I am Lucy, 35 years old, and my life is the definition of happiness and contentment, at least on the surface. I am married to Lucas, 38 years old, CEO of a wildly successful tech company in Austin, Texas. He is an ideal husband: intelligent, handsome, accomplished, and always a solid support for our family. For seven years of marriage, everything has been like a harmonious symphony. Every morning, I wake up early, brew coffee, and prepare a nutritious and delicious breakfast for Lucas and our precious daughter. Lily, 6 years old, is an adorable girl with bright eyes and an innocent smile, always babbling stories from kindergarten. Our home in the upscale suburbs is always filled with laughter, sunshine, and a cosy, peaceful feeling.

“Lucas, here’s your coffee,” I smiled, placing the cup on his desk.

“Perfect, Lucy. You always know how to wake me up,” he replied, his eyes still glued to his tablet screen. “I have an important meeting today, I need to focus.”

“Don’t overwork yourself, honey. You know, health is most important,” I said, putting my hand on his shoulder.

“I know, my love. For our family, I’ll do anything,” Lucas said, turning to kiss my forehead lightly. His words once were my raison d’être.

Friends and relatives always admired our lives. They called Lucas “a family man,” and I, a dutiful wife, a successful architect with my projects, was considered “the perfect role model.” We had evenings gathered by the fireplace, Lucas telling interesting stories about work, and Lily clutching her teddy bear, asking me to sing her favourite lullabies.

“Mommy, sing ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star’ again!” Lily rubbed her eyes, her voice sleepy.

I smiled, gently stroking her hair: “Okay, my little angel. But this is the last one, you have to sleep now.”

I was proud of the life I had built, of my talented husband and my precious daughter. I trusted Lucas absolutely, in the love and bond we shared. We weren’t just a family; we were a symbol of happiness, a dream many envied.

But in the shadows, another story was being woven, the story of Seraphina. Hidden beneath the facade of Lucas’s new marketing assistant was a soul once shattered. Seraphina, at 35, carried a profound tragedy. She was once an opera prodigy, a gifted singer with a talent many envied.

“Seraphina’s voice, it’s like an echo from heaven, clear and powerful,” I once heard my opera professor say.

During our university years, Seraphina and I were the fiercest rivals in the opera department. She was the shining star, always expected to become a top diva. But then, at the final night of the most prestigious opera singing competition at school, the prize we both coveted slipped from her grasp and landed in mine.

“And the winner of the ‘Future Opera Star’ competition is… Lucy Ivanova!” The host’s voice boomed. I walked onto the stage to thunderous applause, spotlights shining directly on me. Turning, I saw Seraphina standing in the wings, her eyes glaring at me, her face pale. That gaze, I could never forget. I knew myself that the prize shouldn’t have been mine. That fateful night, when my name was called, I felt Seraphina’s desperate eyes from the wings. My smile on stage, the vibrant bouquets in my arms, all hid a terrible truth: my mother had bought that prize.

“Daughter, I told you, you have to be the winner!” Her voice rang out on the phone a few days before the final, full of determination. My mother, a powerful and achievement-driven woman, never accepted failure. “I’ve taken care of everything. You just need to go out there and perform well. The prize will be yours.”

I protested, begged, saying I wanted to win on my own merits. “Mom, I don’t want to! I want to win fairly!”

“Fair? You’re too naive, Lucy. In this world, nothing is fair. There are only the strong and the weak. I’ll make sure you’re always the strong one.”

And she did. She used money, her connections, to bribe the judges, turning the final night into a rigged performance. I knew Seraphina deserved it more than I did. Her voice, her passion, all were superior. That prize was her only path to studying abroad for free, to escape her family’s financial burdens. I had unintentionally, or intentionally, taken everything from her. The weight of that truth has haunted me for years, like a sad song constantly echoing in my mind.

That night, in desperation and resentment, Seraphina tried to push her voice to its limits, hoping to break through boundaries to prove herself. The consequence was a terrible tragedy: her vocal cords were permanently damaged, her singing voice vanished, and she could no longer sing. Her lifelong dream, the glory she had once touched, all crumbled in one night.

Seraphina’s life afterwards was a series of days steeped in bitterness and unhealed pain. She had to watch me flourish in my career and personal life, while she lost everything. The pain of losing her voice, losing her dream, transformed into a deep chasm in Seraphina’s soul, a chasm filled with resentment and a thirst for revenge. She was no longer the passionate Seraphina of old; now, she was merely a woman living in hatred, secretly planning to reclaim what she believed I had stolen from her. She wanted me to taste the feeling of losing everything, too.

Everything began to change slowly, almost imperceptibly, like tiny cracks in a freshly painted wall. Lucas, who used to always come home on time for dinner with the family, now frequently cited “unexpected meetings” that lasted late into the night.

“Lucy, I’m sorry, my love. I have an unexpected meeting again tonight. A big project is nearing completion, and I can’t be absent,” Lucas said over the phone, sounding tired.

“Again, honey? You’ve been coming home so late lately. Lily misses you so much,” I tried to suppress my disappointment.

“I know, my love. I miss you two, too. But work is work. I’ll make it up to you and Lily later, okay? Good night!” Lucas hung up, leaving me with growing anxiety.

He started carrying a second phone – an older iPhone, always placed face down on his desk and locked. He also started travelling more, to cities he rarely visited before, like Denver or Portland, and these trips were often announced abruptly, making it difficult for me to adjust my schedule.

“Lucy, I have to fly to Denver tomorrow. A sudden change with the partners, I have to be there immediately,” Lucas said when he came home at midnight, looking exhausted.

“That sudden, honey? Do you need me to arrange anything?” I asked, trying to remain calm.

“No need, my love, I can handle it. You just stay home and take care of Lily,” he said, avoiding my gaze.

One evening, as I was folding Lucas’s clothes for his sudden business trip, a small, shimmering object fell from his suit jacket pocket. It was a tiny, intricately carved cufflink with a sapphire-like blue stone, sparkling under the bedroom light.

I picked it up, a chill running down my fingers. “This cufflink… It’s not yours.”

Lucas turned, startled: “Oh, that? Must be someone from a meeting. Just throw it away.” He tried to appear calm, but his eyes showed a hint of uneasiness.

My heart pounded. That wasn’t the kind of cufflink that belonged to any of Lucas’s suits, or any item in our wardrobe. A sense of unease crept in, cold, but I tried to reassure myself. “Maybe he found it somewhere, or it’s a colleague’s cufflink that accidentally fell out,” I told myself. I placed the cufflink in a small silver box on my dressing table, where I usually kept small mementoes, trying not to think about it anymore. But its image lingered in my mind, like a small dark spot on my perfect picture.

What I didn’t know was that the cufflink was part of a much larger plan, a plan that stemmed not only from Seraphina but also from Lucas himself. Lucas, with his successful and perfect facade, was in fact a materialistic and calculating master. He had been tracking my assets for a long time, knowing I had a significant private fortune from real estate ventures and personal investments before our marriage. He had planned to seize it all. He knew well about the real estate projects I was undertaking, the huge profits they brought in.

“Lucy, you’re so talented. The money you earn from those projects is even more than what I make as CEO,” Lucas once said, his voice full of feigned admiration. At the time, I felt warmth, not knowing it was just cold calculation.

Seraphina, with her blind hatred, was just a perfect pawn in Lucas’s hands. He exploited her weakness and thirst for revenge to execute his plan, and she was completely unaware that she was being manipulated. The cufflink was a false “clue,” intentionally left by Lucas to sow suspicion, pushing me to search for the “truth” he wanted me to see – a perfect play to cover up his real scheme.

Night fell. I sat by the window, the sapphire cufflink still in my palm. Lucas’s phone vibrated, and a message arrived. It was from Seraphina. She texted Lucas: “My love, you’re later than usual tonight? I miss you.” Along with it was a smiling selfie, and I noticed the sapphire necklace around her neck, matching the colour of the cufflink. A punch to my heart.

Not just an opera rival, Seraphina also had a deeper tragedy that I was unaware of. Going back to that final night, when my name was called:

Seraphina looked at me from the wings. Her eyes were not just hateful, but also desperate. Afterwards, I faintly heard her talking on the phone in the dressing room, her voice trembling.

“Mom, I… I didn’t win. The prize… it went to Lucy.”

The voice on the other end of the phone rang out, full of disappointment: “That girl stole your only chance. That prize was a full scholarship to study opera in Italy, our only way out of debt!”

I overheard it accidentally, but at the time, I was too immersed in the joy of victory to pay attention. I didn’t know that the prize was not just prestige, but Seraphina’s only ticket to free study abroad, her family’s way out of financial burden.

And then, I heard her sobbing: “I tried my best. I strained my voice. I have to sing, Mom! I have to get it back! I have to prove myself!”

That night, I saw her collapse on the floor, one side of her throat bruised. I vaguely heard rumours that she had suffered severe vocal cord damage. But I still didn’t fully understand the tragedy. To me, it was a victory. To her, it was the beginning of hell.

Seraphina always believed her life was lost; everything changed the moment I appeared. Not just her opera dream and study abroad path, but also her first love.

A memory flashed: Ethan, the piano student whom Seraphina deeply loved, and who always encouraged her to pursue her dream. But after that fateful competition night, when Seraphina lost her voice, Ethan gradually distanced himself from her. He once said, “I love your voice, Seraphina. You’re a genius. Without your voice, you’re not yourself anymore.”

Those words shattered Seraphina’s heart. She believed I had not only stolen the prize but also indirectly deprived her of the love of her life. That pain turned into intense hatred, a smouldering fire that burned within her for years.

And now, she was back, under the guise of my husband’s assistant, with a sapphire necklace identical to the fateful cufflink. A new, far colder fear enveloped me. This was not just an affair; this was a conspiracy. I continued searching and discovered a series of messages between Lucas and someone named “Counsellor” – real name: Richard. The content related to “transfer of property ownership,” “divorce plans,” and “sole custody.” At this point, I began to realise a truth more horrifying than betrayal: Lucas was planning to seize my assets, and Seraphina was just a pawn in his game.

In the days that followed, anxiety constantly gnawed at my mind. I still tried to maintain a calm facade, still smiled, still cared for my family, but every gesture felt more forced.

“Mommy, are you okay? You don’t smile as much as before,” Lily asked, her big eyes looking at me with worry.

“It’s nothing, my love. Mommy’s just a little tired. You go play,” I said, trying to force a reassuring smile.

I tried to talk to Lucas, asking about his work, about his recent trips, but he always evaded or gave vague answers, his eyes frequently glued to that other phone.

“Lucas, you seem so busy lately. Can I help with anything?” I asked one evening, as he was checking his phone.

“It’s nothing, darling. Just company stuff. It’s complicated, you don’t need to worry about it,” he replied curtly, then turned his back.

I felt like an invisible, cold wall was slowly rising between us, separating two people who were once one. I often sat in my spacious kitchen late at night, looking out at the quiet garden, which had witnessed so many happy moments of our family. I remembered the vows made under the rose arch on our wedding day, the warm hugs every morning, the future plans we had excitedly drawn up. Was our love, those beautiful memories, just a dream I had deluded myself with? My greatest fear was not losing him, but losing trust, losing the meaning of seven years of living together. I began to doubt myself, wondering if I hadn’t been good enough, attractive enough, or caring enough towards him. The way I looked at Lucas now was no longer with absolute trust, but a mixture of love and a nagging doubt, a deep chasm opening in my heart. I felt lost in my own home, a home that was once a paradise, now a gilded cage. In the long, sleepless nights, the image of Seraphina, the name I had tried to bury deep in my memory from university, kept resurfacing, like an omen.

As for Seraphina, she was steeped in pain and resentment. Every day, the image of me on stage, receiving the award, and then my happy life, felt like a knife twisting in her unhealed wound.

“Lucy! You stole everything from me! My voice, my dream, my future… Everything!” Seraphina had once screamed in anger when we bumped into each other at a charity event a few years ago, but I had tried to avoid her, not wanting to confront the past.

She was once everything I dreamed of becoming, but now, she was a dispossessed woman, a silenced singer. Envy and hatred had transformed Seraphina into someone else, someone who lived only for revenge. She felt she had been robbed not only of her voice but also of her future, and she believed I was responsible for it all.

When Lucas approached her at a tech event a few months ago, whispering sweet words about “avenging the one who ruined your life,” Seraphina fell into the perfect trap.

“Ms. Seraphina, I know you are a talented woman who was unjustly treated,” Lucas said, his eyes full of feigned sympathy. “I can help you get back what you deserve.”

Seraphina looked at him skeptically at first, but Lucas’s words touched her deepest wound. “What are you saying? Help me?”

“That’s right. I can help you take down Lucy. She took everything from you, didn’t she? Now’s the time to get it back,” Lucas said, offering a handkerchief as Seraphina began to tremble.

She didn’t know that Lucas didn’t love her, didn’t care about her pain, but only saw her as a tool to carry out his own dark plan: to seize my assets. Lucas had carefully researched my past and Seraphina’s, knowing the animosity between us, and he cleverly exploited it. He even promised Seraphina a high position in his company, a wealthy life, and a future she thought she could regain her lost glory. Seraphina believed Lucas, believing he was the only one who understood and sympathised with her pain.

One weekend morning, Lucas said he had a sudden remote meeting and needed to go for a run to clear his head.

“I’m going now, my love. I’ll be back soon,” he said, kissing my hair lightly, as always.

As soon as the door closed, I decided to act. I knew Lucas always kept his second phone in a predictable place, under a stack of magazines on the coffee table. I had secretly watched him enter his password many times, memorising his finger movements. After a few tries, I unlocked it.

Among the messages, there was a frequent conversation with an unsaved number, only a heart emoji. The content was mostly passionate declarations of love, secret rendezvous, and photos of a luxurious, modern, light-filled apartment I had never seen.

“Missing you so much, Lucas. Our apartment is wonderful,” Seraphina texted.

“I miss you, too, my love. We’re about to have a new life, my darling,” Lucas replied.

My heart tightened as I read each message.

What stunned me was a message Lucas sent a few days ago: “My love, I’ll pick you up in the hotel lobby at 9 PM. Don’t forget the sapphire necklace I gave you. It’s our anniversary gift.” The sapphire necklace… I rushed to the bedroom, rummaging through the small silver box on my dressing table, where I had kept the strange cufflink. The sapphire-studded cufflink, sparkling in the light, was no longer an inanimate object. It was a piece that fit perfectly with the detail in the message. A cold sensation ran down my spine, but this time it wasn’t fear. It was the cold resolve of a broken heart. I knew I had to find out the truth.

As I scrolled through the photos on the phone, a picture of the woman looking up, with a hidden, ironic smile, froze me. Golden hair, deep blue eyes, and a small, faint scar on her right temple… It couldn’t be anyone else. It was Seraphina. Seraphina, my sworn enemy from university.

I remembered that fateful day vividly: the final night of the most prestigious opera singing competition at school. We were both strong contenders. I gave my all, and in the end, that prestigious award went to me. Seraphina stood there, her eyes resentful, and from then on, she disappeared from my life, carrying the bitterness of defeat. People rumoured that she had suffered severe vocal cord damage after that competition, unable to sing anymore. And now, she was back, under the guise of my husband’s assistant, with a sapphire necklace identical to the fateful cufflink. A new, far colder fear enveloped me. This was not just an affair; this was a conspiracy.

I continued searching and discovered a series of messages between Lucas and someone named “Counsellor” (real name: Richard). The content related to “transfer of property ownership,” “divorce plans,” and “sole custody.”

    “Everything’s ready, Richard?” Lucas texted.

“Yes, Lucas. Just waiting for your signal. Lucy’s assets will soon be yours,” Richard replied.

At this point, I began to realise a truth more horrifying than betrayal: Lucas was planning to seize my assets, and Seraphina was just a pawn in his game. He didn’t love Seraphina; he only exploited her hatred.

I quietly accessed Lucas’s secret email account that he used for private business. I found a series of hotel bills from his recent “business trips,” but the locations didn’t match the itinerary he told me. Most notably, a bill from a luxurious boutique hotel in downtown Austin, just a few blocks from his company, not Denver or Portland, as he claimed. This bill detailed dinner for two at the hotel’s finest restaurant, expensive wine, and especially the cost of a huge bouquet of white lilies. White lilies – that was the flower I won the opera competition with years ago; they gave me such a large bouquet of white lilies that I couldn’t even hold it all. This was no coincidence.

“Lucas, you used my card to pay for this hotel bill?” I whispered, my voice icy as I looked at a bill with my name on it.

As I examined the bills more closely, I discovered something terrifying. There were multiple bills from the same hotel, but with different registered names. Some were Lucas’s name, some were Seraphina’s, but there were also some bills paid with my credit card, used for a “company meeting” I knew nothing about. Lucas had intentionally created false evidence of an affair to make me believe Seraphina was the only enemy, while he was secretly draining my finances.

I found a hidden file on Lucas’s tablet, named “New Project.” I opened it, and what stunned me was that it wasn’t technical drawings or financial reports, as the name suggested. Instead, it was a folder full of photos of Seraphina, posing in the luxurious apartment I had seen in the messages, with the sapphire necklace shimmering around her neck. I quickly scrolled through the other folders. I found legal documents, financial plan drafts, and a series of recently deleted conversations. But even more horrifying, in a few photos, Seraphina was holding a small girl with curly blonde hair, laughing brightly. It was Lily, my daughter.

And then, I discovered a hidden PDF file, titled “Asset and Custody Seizure Plan.” It was a detailed, step-by-step plan outlining how Lucas would divorce me, seize all my assets, and most importantly, gain custody of Lily. It included drafts of changes to my will, transferring ownership of real estate to Lucas, and even withdrawing all funds from my private savings accounts.

The most chilling part of the plan involved Seraphina. Seraphina would play the role of “the discovered mistress,” creating an affair scandal to distract me. While I was busy with the “war” with Seraphina, Lucas would covertly transfer assets and prepare legal procedures to seize Lily. The ultimate goal was for Lucas to divorce me and marry Seraphina (after the scandal subsided), so Lily would become Lucas and Seraphina’s daughter in the public eye. The last line in the document was capitalised and bolded: “Everything Lucy once had will now be mine. Including her daughter… and all those juicy assets.”

I trembled as I looked at the last photo in the folder: Lily’s fake birth certificate, with Lucas’s and Seraphina’s names listed as “father” and “mother.” I was stunned. No way! Lucas couldn’t be Lily’s biological father with Seraphina! Lily is my daughter and Lucas’s daughter! I quickly opened the drawer, searching for Lily’s original birth certificate. My heart pounded. I found it. Father’s name is Lucas, mother’s name is Lucy.

So what was this document? Lucas had forged his own daughter’s birth certificate for this sordid plot? A small piece of paper tucked into the documents had a scribbled handwritten note: “The plan is almost complete. Lucas believes Lily is his and my daughter. Next step: use Lucas’s custody rights to take Lily.” That handwriting, I realised, was Seraphina’s. Seraphina still believed Lucas loved her and was helping her get revenge on me. She had no idea she was merely a pawn in Lucas’s hands.

I also found an email Lucas sent to his “Counsellor”: “The plan with Seraphina is on track. Lucy has started to suspect an affair, and she’ll never suspect the real plan. Prepare the asset transfer documents. We need to move fast before she realises.” I also found audio recordings of calls between Lucas and Richard, where Lucas scoffed: “That Seraphina girl is so stupid. She thinks she’s getting revenge, but she’s just my dog. Lucy is too rich, I need that money.”

On Lucas’s birthday, I decided to host a cosy party at home. I invited Lucas’s parents, a few of our close friends, and, of course, I also extended an invitation to Seraphina. Lucas seemed slightly surprised to see Seraphina there, but quickly regained his usual calm and polite demeanor, introducing her as “a very talented marketing assistant.” Seraphina, on the other hand, wore a smug smile, looking at me with a challenging glint in her eyes.

“Hello, Lucy. Long time no see, huh?” Seraphina said, her voice full of sarcasm, her eyes sweeping over Lucas meaningfully.

“Hello, Seraphina. I’m glad you could make it,” I replied, my smile unwavering, but inside, a fire raged.

As everyone was happily chatting, enjoying dinner, and toasting, I suddenly stood up, raising my wine glass. “Thank you all for joining Lucas on this special day. I also have a special gift I’d like to dedicate to Lucas… and to someone else here.” I walked towards the large TV in the living room, plugged in a USB, and turned on the slideshow mode.

The large screen displayed not our cherished memories, but a series of secret messages between Lucas and Seraphina, accompanied by photos of the apartment, hotel bills, and images of Seraphina wearing the sapphire necklace. The entire room fell into absolute silence. Lucas stood frozen, his face pale, his eyes glued to the screen. Seraphina stammered: “Lucy, it’s not what you think…”

“I can explain, Lucy!” Lucas blurted out, his voice faltering.

“Explain what? The love messages, her photos in your apartment? Or this sapphire cufflink?” I said, pulling the cufflink from my pocket and placing it on the table.

But I didn’t stop there. The next photo appeared, a picture of Lucas and Seraphina standing outside that luxurious apartment, holding hands with Lily, my daughter, who was smiling brightly. And then, the final photo appeared: the “Asset and Custody Seizure Plan” document I found on Lucas’s computer, with Lucas’s detailed plan, and especially the bolded last line: “Everything Lucy once had will now be mine. Including her daughter… and all those juicy assets.”

The entire room erupted in murmurs, surprise, and anger. Lucas’s parents were stunned. Our friends whispered to each other. Seraphina turned to Lucas, her eyes full of suspicion and fear. “Lucas, you… You deceived me? What is this?”

Lucas, his face as white as a sheet, looked at Seraphina with horror. “You… you ruined everything!” he roared, trying to blame Seraphina.

“Enough, Lucas!” I said, my voice echoing through the room. “You don’t need to act anymore.” I looked directly into his eyes, my voice firm, without a tremor, like a sharp blade: “You lied to me, Lucas. You betrayed me with this woman, and you used her to seize my assets. You are scum, Lucas, a materialistic and shameless man!” I turned to Seraphina, my eyes filled with pity but also a hint of contempt: “Seraphina, he used you. He doesn’t love you; he just wants me to lose everything, and you were his tool. Do you remember what he told Richard about you?”

Then I turned back to the screen, and a large image appeared: a screenshot of a video call between Seraphina and someone, on the screen was a medical record with the diagnosis “permanent vocal cord damage.” Below that, an audio recording played from the TV speakers, Seraphina’s voice full of venom: “Ha, Lucy, you think you beat me? You got that worthless prize, but I’ll take everything you cherish. Your husband, your life, and your daughter. That girl will call me mother!”

It was Seraphina’s voice, recorded when she thought she was speaking privately with an accomplice. Lily, my precious daughter, was clinging to my back, her innocent eyes watching the chaotic scene, beginning to sob uncontrollably.

“Seraphina, you can’t sing anymore, but you can still talk. And those words, I recorded,” I said, my voice cold.

The most horrifying twist occurred. After Seraphina’s audio recording, I pressed another button. The screen switched to a magnified image of Lily’s forged birth certificate that I found in Lucas’s “Seizure Plan” file. I held Lily’s original birth certificate in my hand, issued by the hospital, and placed it on the table next to the screen. “This is Lily’s real birth certificate. Mother’s name is Lucy, father’s name is Lucas. The birth certificate that Seraphina believed was real, and that Lucas used to sow doubt about our daughter’s paternity… is a fake created by Lucas to manipulate both of us!”

“No… no way…” Seraphina mumbled, her eyes fixed on the forged birth certificate, then looked at Lucas, tears streaming down her face. “You… you lied to me, Lucas?”

“Shut up, Seraphina!” Lucas roared, trying to snatch the USB from the TV. But it was too late.

The naked truth was exposed. Lucas was not only cheating, not only using Seraphina, but also the mastermind of this entire plot, aiming to seize my assets and child custody. He had forged his own daughter’s birth certificate for this sordid plot, sowing doubt in Seraphina’s mind, making her believe Lily was her and Lucas’s daughter, thereby easily taking Lily from me. Seraphina also realised she had been cruelly deceived and used by Lucas.

Lucas and Seraphina stood there, pale as ghosts, speechless. Both were victims, but in different ways. Lucas was the wicked mastermind, while Seraphina was a victim of hatred and blindness. Both left in shame and horror, while my family was plunged into a chaotic mix of emotions.

My life was completely turned upside down. The truth about Lucas’s malicious plot and the fact that Seraphina was also his victim struck a heavy blow. But instead of collapsing, I found a hidden strength I never knew I possessed. I began to seek legal support, meeting with the best lawyers to seek justice for myself and my family.

I spoke frankly with Lily, explaining that her parents would live separately, and no matter what, my love for her would never change.

“Mommy, are you scared?” Lily asked, hugging me tightly.

“It’s okay, my love. Mommy’s here. We’ll always be together,” I said, inhaling her hair.

Lily, though small, was sensitive and understanding. She hugged me tightly and whispered, “I love you, Lucy. Don’t be sad.” That hug, those words, were my motivation to keep fighting. I decided I would fight to make Lucas accountable for his betrayal and cruel plot, and Seraphina also had to face the consequences of her actions, even though she was also Lucas’s victim.

A year later, Lucas and I finalised our divorce with the most favourable terms for me and Lily. Lucas bore full financial responsibility, and full custody of Lily was granted to me. With clear evidence of document forgery, conspiracy to seize assets and custody, Lucas was criminally prosecuted and faced prison time. His career and reputation completely collapsed.

“Lucy, I’m sorry. I… I was wrong,” Lucas said during the trial, his voice trembling, not an ounce of arrogance left.

Seraphina, after realising she had been deceived and used by Lucas, cooperated with the investigation, providing additional evidence against Lucas. Although still facing some charges related to her involvement in the conspiracy, she received more leniency due to her cooperation and severe psychological trauma. She was sent for psychological treatment to cope with the trauma of her past and the deception she had endured.

“I just wanted my voice back, Lucy. I didn’t know he was such a terrible person,” Seraphina told me during a confrontation, her eyes blank, no longer filled with the fire of hatred. “I was wrong. I let hatred blind me. But I had no idea he was using me to steal your assets. I… I just wanted you to taste pain.” I looked at her, and I saw a part of myself in her – a woman hurt, deceived. I didn’t fully forgive her, but I understood her pain.

I moved to a smaller, cosier apartment, closer to Lily’s school. I also restarted my career, taking on larger architectural projects and quickly advancing in the company.

“Congratulations, Lucy! The new commercial building project in Houston has been approved. You’ll be the project lead,” my boss announced, his eyes full of trust.

“Thank you. I won’t disappoint you,” I replied, feeling a new sense of freedom and excitement.

Lily was still a cheerful, lively girl, and we had our private, warm evenings together, reading books, playing games, and sharing everything. Lily was always my light.

Lucas received a fitting sentence and could never come near me or Lily again. Seraphina, after psychological treatment, decided to leave Austin to seek a new life, trying to heal her emotional wounds and find meaning in her life, no longer a puppet of hatred or a victim of manipulation.

I no longer believed in perfect pictures or empty promises. I believed in truth, in my own strength, and in the sincere love I had for Lily. My life was no longer a glamorous dream, but it was a reality worth living, full of meaning and authenticity. I learned that no matter how painful the betrayal, no matter how harsh the truth, we can still rise, stronger and more mature. Dawn always comes after the storm, and I, Lucy, was ready to embrace the new light in my life, with Lily by my side, as a true family, built on love, not lies or conspiracy.

The legal battle and emotional shock completely transformed me. I was no longer the weak Lucy who always believed in perfection. I became strong, independent, and resilient. Lily was everything to me, and our mother-daughter bond transcended all biological ties or cruel conspiracies, becoming a testament that love can be built on care, attachment, and sacrifice, not just bloodline.

My parents, after initial shock and anger, also accepted and loved Lily as their granddaughter. They always stood by me and supported me. My family witnessed me overcome the storm, and they became my strongest support.

The scars in my heart were still there, but they were no longer a throbbing pain but marks of growth. I learned to forgive – not Lucas or Seraphina in the sense of forgetting their sins, but to free myself from the burden of hatred, so I could live on peacefully.

On the balcony of my new apartment, I often watched the Austin skyline at night with Lily. The sparkling lights were like new hopes.

“Mommy, I wish I were a star,” Lily said, pointing to the sky.

“You are my brightest star, my love,” I whispered, holding her close.

Lily would never lack a mother’s love. And I, Lucy, would continue to live a full life, without falsehood, without constraints, completely free and authentic. Because I understood that freedom doesn’t come after wounds heal, but it comes when we are brave enough to let go of what no longer serves us, and choose our own path, no matter how difficult.
