The 95-year-old actor and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 64, were discovered deceased in their Santa Fe residence on Wednesday. The precise time of their passing remains unknown. Tragically, one of their dogs was also found lifeless alongside them.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Leslie expressed that despite maintaining a close relationship with her father, she had not seen or spoken to him for several months.
“Everything seemed normal, and he was doing well,” she stated. “Even at his age, he was in excellent physical condition. He enjoyed practicing Pilates and yoga regularly, and he kept up with those routines several times a week. He was in good health.”
Leslie and her sister, Elizabeth, suspect that their father and stepmother may have succumbed to toxic fumes from a carbon monoxide leak in their home.
“The house is relatively modern, built in 2000,” Elizabeth told TMZ. “We’re unsure whether there were any gas-related issues or if there had been any recent maintenance visits to the property.”
Their deaths came to light when a concerned neighbor conducted a welfare check and alerted authorities. Deputies arrived at the scene alongside fire department personnel, ensuring no lingering toxic fumes posed a risk to others.
Following her father’s retirement from acting, Elizabeth shared that he and Betsy led a peaceful and private life. She also mentioned that Hackman held a special fondness for The French Connection, the film that solidified his status as a Hollywood legend.
Hackman publicly announced his retirement in 2004, telling Larry King that he had no upcoming projects and would not be returning to the film industry.
A two-time Academy Award winner, Gene Hackman was celebrated for his versatility and ability to master any role he took on.
