LOS ANGELES – Actor and comedian Steve Carell is making prom night unforgettable for high school seniors in Southern California who have been impacted by the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles.
In a heartfelt Instagram video on Tuesday, the Office star announced his collaboration with the nonprofit organization Alice’s Kids to fund prom expenses for students at six Pasadena high schools.
“If you’ve already paid for your prom tickets, don’t worry—they’ll reimburse you,” Carell assured in the video. “It’s a pretty sweet deal.”
The recent wildfires wreaked havoc across the Los Angeles area, destroying over 16,000 homes, businesses, and buildings. At least 29 lives were lost in the Pacific Palisades and Altadena regions, and several schools suffered extensive damage, forcing students and families to scramble for alternative learning spaces.
Thanks to Alice’s Kids, approximately $175,000 will go toward covering prom costs for over 800 students, helping them take part in this milestone event. With tickets typically priced between $100 and $150, this initiative ensures that financial barriers won’t stand in the way of a well-deserved celebration.
“Prom is meant to be a joyous occasion,” said Ron Fitzsimmons, executive director of Alice’s Kids. “For seniors whose lives have been turned upside down by these wildfires, we wanted to offer some relief and help make their night extra special.”
A video posted by John Muir High School—one of the beneficiary schools—captured the moment students erupted in cheers as they learned about Carell’s generous surprise during a school assembly.
Among the other schools receiving support is Aveson Charter School, which suffered severe losses—its elementary campus was completely destroyed, and its upper-grade facilities were left damaged and unusable.
Carell, known for his philanthropy, also took part in the “Skate for LA Strong” charity hockey tournament last week to raise funds for fire relief efforts.
Signing off in his signature comedic style, he told the students: “Have fun, enjoy the prom… and remember, this is Steve Carell.
