A magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck the Westlake Village area on Sunday afternoon, as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
The quake occurred just after 1 p.m. at an estimated depth of seven miles. Initially recorded as a 4.4 magnitude event, the measurement was later revised.
Following the main tremor, several smaller quakes were detected in the Malibu area, with magnitudes of 2.5, 3.0, and 2.8.
Shaking Felt Across Multiple Cities
While no immediate reports of injuries or damage were received, residents from Canoga Park, Simi Valley, Lomita, La Verne, and Montebello reported feeling the shaking.
Seismologist Lucy Jones spoke to ABC7 about the event, explaining that a 4.1 magnitude earthquake is unlikely to cause structural damage.
“This isn’t a problem for anyone—it creates noticeable shaking and might cause some fear, but not destruction,” Jones said. “We’ve seen a pattern of increased seismic activity in this region over the past year. While we can’t predict exactly what it means, we do know that when an area experiences frequent earthquakes, it’s likely to continue seeing more.”
For those looking to prepare for potential future quakes, ABC7 has compiled a list of essential earthquake kit items to help residents be ready for “the big one.”
