A massive search effort for 2-year-old Dane Paulsen, who was reported missing on March 1, came to a tragic conclusion on Tuesday when his body was discovered in the Siletz River, approximately three miles downstream from his family’s home, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department.
Search Focused on River’s Edge
Authorities had centered their search along the river, believing evidence suggested the toddler had been near the water before disappearing. His body was found at 11:13 a.m. on March 5.
Sheriff Adam Shanks expressed deep sorrow in a statement:
“Our thoughts are with the family, who are facing an unbearable sorrow. We are deeply grateful for the support and dedication shown by the search teams and our communities throughout this difficult time, though we wish it was under different circumstances.”
The Lincoln County Medical Examiner’s Office is now involved, but no additional details are available at this time.
Dane’s Disappearance & Massive Search Effort
Dane was last seen playing in the front yard of his family’s home in Siletz, Oregon, before vanishing out of sight from his parents.
The extensive search effort included:
- 682 acres and 341 miles covered
- 88 search-and-rescue members
- 40 investigators
- 4 aerial drones
- Multiple trailing dogs
- 140 community volunteers
The FBI and the Lincoln County Major Crime Team also assisted in the investigation. Initially, authorities searched for a man in a station wagon seen in the area 30 minutes before Dane disappeared, but the driver was later cleared of suspicion.
No Signs of Abduction or Foul Play
Investigators have since ruled out criminal activity, saying there is no evidence of abduction.
Dane’s family described him as “friendly and fearless,” noting he was comfortable around strangers and water but could not swim. He was particularly drawn to water and vehicles.
Community Mourns Tragic Outcome
The FBI’s Victim Service Division is now assisting the Paulsen family during this heartbreaking time. Authorities have asked the public and media to respect the family’s privacy.
