The Hollyoaks star Paul Danan, who passed away in January at the age of 46, has had his cause of death officially confirmed.
An inquest opened on March 11 revealed that the actor died at home from the effects of multiple substances, including cocaine and heroin. He was found unresponsive at his residence in Bristol on January 15, with paramedics declaring him deceased at the scene.
Inquest Findings
At the hearing at Bristol Avon Coroner’s Court, Coroner’s officer Alexis Camp stated that the provisional cause of death was a “combined toxicity” of various drugs, including heroin, methadone, codeine, pregabalin, cocaine, and zopiclone. Benzodiazepines were also identified as a contributing factor.
Camp noted that there were no concerns raised by the family, and no note was found. A post-mortem was conducted, with samples taken for further analysis. Statements will be collected from Danan’s family, GP, police, and the ambulance service, while inquiries continue with the Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust (AWP).
A Life Marked by Success and Struggles
Danan rose to fame portraying Sol Patrick in Hollyoaks between 1997 and 2001. He later became a well-known reality TV personality, appearing on Celebrity Love Island (2005) and Celebrity Big Brother (2017).
Despite his on-screen success, he had been open about his battle with addiction, having sought rehabilitation multiple times.
His partner, Melissa Crooks, was the one who formally identified him at the scene. The inquest has been adjourned until May 28, when a full hearing will take place.
Legal Issues Prior to His Passing
At the time of his death, Danan was due in Warrington Magistrates’ Court the following day to face charges related to drug possession and driving under the influence. He had been accused of possessing cocaine and cannabis and of drug-impaired driving in Warrington, Cheshire, in October 2024.
