Los Angeles police arrested rapper Jay Rock, whose real name is Johnny Reed McKinzie, on Thursday evening, as confirmed by jail records.
According to the LAPD, the 39-year-old artist was pulled over around 6 p.m., though the reason for the initial stop remains unclear. Authorities stated that Jay Rock attempted to flee his vehicle when officers refused to disclose why he was being detained. A firearm was reportedly left behind in the car.
He was later booked on suspicion of a felony weapons violation.
Jay Rock, a prominent figure in the Top Dawg Entertainment label, is widely recognized for his collaborations with Kendrick Lamar. In 2019, he won a Grammy for King’s Dead and was honored with the key to his hometown of Watts later that year.
