Margaret, the wife of millionaire Conon, was quite accustomed to her husband’s charitable endeavors. Yet, a seed of suspicion took root when she learned Conon was secretly visiting a dilapidated metal cabin each day, where a child resided.
Conon, a self-made business magnate, was famous not only for the enterprises he had established but also for his considerable charitable contributions. He was renowned in the community for his generous heart, donating substantial amounts monthly to orphanages and hospitals. However, Margaret, his spouse, stood in stark contrast to his altruism.
Margaret often chided Conon for squandering their hard-earned fortunes on what she deemed as “trifles.” She was a woman of superficial taste, ever desiring the latest high-end fashion items and indulging in luxury vacations across exotic locales.
The plot thickened one day when a friend informed Margaret of having spotted Conon frequently exiting a rusty metal cabin. Situated near a trailer park, it seemed implausible that Conon would have any business there. Intrigued and disturbed, Margaret’s mind flooded with possibilities. Was Conon having an affair? Did he have a secret child?
Cornering Conon that evening, Margaret queried about his whereabouts. “I was at work, then stopped by a friend’s office for a brief chat,” Conon replied, evasively. Unconvinced, the seeds of distrust flourished in her mind. Determined to uncover the truth, Margaret resolved to shadow Conon in the subsequent days.
One day, Margaret’s heart pounded as she glimpsed a stroller by the cabin door. Sounds of a baby crying came from within, reinforcing her fears of Conon leading a double life. Unable to restrain herself, she barged into the hut, confronting a shocking scene.
Inside, Conon stood beside a woman cradling a child. “Conon! What is going on here? Who is she, and why do you visit her daily? Are you having an affair?” Margaret burst out, a whirlwind of emotion erupting forth.
Calmly, but with urgency in his voice, Conon replied, “Margaret, let me explain. Please, let’s talk about this at home.” The woman, visibly uncomfortable, avoided Margaret’s furious gaze.
Back at their dining room table, Margaret crossed her arms defensively. “Go on,” she challenged Conon, eager for an explanation.
“I would never cheat on you, Margaret. It pains me you even entertained the thought. Yes, I have secrets, but all for a good cause. I’m aware of your dislike for my charitable endeavors, but it’s something I need to continue,” Conon began his explanation.
“A couple of weeks ago, I encountered Lucy, the woman you met. She was on the street with her baby, begging for money. I gave her $100 to buy a blanket and diapers, then inquired about their circumstances,” Conon narrated.
Margaret listened in silence, her demeanor unyielding. Conon continued, revealing that Lucy had been residing in the cabin for three months.
“Her partner left three months ago, promising to return after a job stint in another city. He never came back. I offered them a furnished apartment for better living conditions, but Lucy refused. She loved her partner and hoped to await his return,” Conon explained.
“I couldn’t forgive myself if anything happened to Lucy and her child. So, I visit daily with hot meals and essentials,” Conon added.
“I don’t believe you. She’s your lover, isn’t she?” Margaret accused.
“Margaret, of course not! How could you even suggest that? Wouldn’t you help if you were in my position?” Conon asked earnestly.
“No, and I don’t want you continuing to aid her. Stop, or I’ll file for divorce,” Margaret threatened.
Conon sighed. “I cannot do that, Margaret. Don’t threaten me with divorce over helping people. We have more than enough wealth—what are a few thousand dollars to assist someone in need?” he reasoned.
Realizing she wouldn’t sway him, Margaret stormed from the dining room, eyes rolling with indignation. The next day, she took an unbelievable step.
She went to court, seeking to have Lucy’s parental rights revoked, claiming Lucy lacked means and misled married men for money. When Conon learned about Margaret’s move from his driver, he was furious.
“What do you think you’re doing?!” Conon demanded, barging into the attorney’s office where Margaret sat.
“Delivering justice,” Margaret retorted coldly.
“No compassion for others, Margaret? I can’t believe I married someone so heartless. Attorney, please excuse us,” Conon said, pulling Margaret aside.
“Don’t you understand why I support Lucy? My father abandoned my family when I was four, leaving us destitute. We were forced to beg, struggling for survival,” Conon reminded her.
Though Margaret knew Conon’s past, she dismissed it, enthralled by his rags-to-riches story that allowed her a plush life.
“I now have the power to ensure others don’t endure what I did. You’re not stopping me from helping people with the money I’ve earned. I am done with this marriage. Consider this divorce filed!” Conon declared, offering her one last glance before storming out.
In disbelief, Margaret pursued Conon, pleading for another chance, but he was resolute. He sent divorce papers and insisted she vacate their home.
Left to fend for herself, Margaret resorted to selling her designer belongings to rent a modest room. Meanwhile, Conon continued thriving in business and philanthropy, steadfast in aiding Lucy and her daughter. Realizing her partner’s abandonment, Lucy discovered new beginnings, blossoming into a healthy, happy relationship with Conon. They married and raised a child together, surrounded by love and care.
