A 13-year-old girl has tragically passed away just days after her seven-year-old brother died, following an incident where a woman allegedly sent ‘poisoned Easter eggs’ as part of a revenge plot against her ex-partner.
Mirian Lira, from Brazil, reportedly received Easter eggs from a woman named Jordélia Pereira Barbosa, with a note that read: “With love, to Mirian Lira. Happy Easter.” According to police, Mirian shared the chocolate with her two children, and her seven-year-old son, Luis, fell severely ill after consuming the treat.
Luis was found unresponsive, and despite his father Rafael’s efforts to perform CPR, the boy went into cardiac arrest and passed away on April 17. Both Mirian and her 13-year-old daughter, Evelyn Silva, were admitted to the hospital in critical condition. Unfortunately, Evelyn later died due to complications caused by the poisoning.
Health authorities confirmed that Evelyn’s death was caused by vascular shock and multiple organ failure, with her condition deteriorating rapidly despite medical intervention.
Mirian remains in stable condition at the hospital.
On April 21, Barbosa was arrested for allegedly poisoning the chocolate and sending it to Mirian, who is reportedly dating Barbosa’s ex-boyfriend. Police apprehended her while she was traveling home on a bus in Santa Inês. A shopping receipt found in her possession confirmed the purchase of the eggs.
In addition to the receipt, Barbosa was carrying two wigs, scissors, cards, a saw knife, and other unidentified substances. CCTV footage reportedly showed her wearing a black wig while buying the chocolate.
When questioned by authorities, Barbosa admitted to purchasing the eggs before Easter, but denied poisoning them. Police also stated that Barbosa had previously attempted similar actions.
According to Brazilian news outlet G, Maurício Martins, the Security Secretary of Maranhão, indicated that the crime appeared to be driven by revenge and jealousy, given that Barbosa’s ex-husband is now in a relationship with Mirian, who, along with her children, was poisoned.
