The US president faced harsh criticism after allegedly ignoring protocol during Pope Francis’ funeral, with many labeling his actions a “disgrace.”
On Saturday, April 26, the late pontiff was laid to rest at Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica in Rome following a funeral mass at St Peter’s Basilica. The passing of Pope Francis on Easter Monday drew massive crowds to the Vatican, with hundreds of thousands arriving to pay their respects.
Over 200,000 people attended the ceremony at St Peter’s Square—including royalty and more than 50 world leaders—to honor the former head of the Catholic Church, who died at age 88 due to a stroke and heart complications.
High-profile attendees included US President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Prince William.
Trump’s appearance, however, drew attention for all the wrong reasons. Critics online and in the media highlighted several actions that they felt breached funeral etiquette and disrespected the solemn occasion.
Wearing a Blue Suit Instead of Black
While most mourners wore black as a symbol of mourning, Trump was seen in a bright blue suit, standing out among the crowd. Traditional Catholic funerals typically require black attire as a mark of respect. Prince William was also seen in a dark blue suit, sparking debate about whether their clothing choices reflected their religious backgrounds or a break from tradition.
Stepping on the Carpet by the Coffin
In addition to his choice of clothing, Trump was also observed standing with his feet on the carpet surrounding the pope’s coffin—a boundary meant to represent holy ground and reserved for the deceased pontiff. Both he and Melania Trump appeared to cross this line, while most others maintained a respectful distance.
Distracted Behavior During the Service
Throughout the ceremony, Trump was reportedly seen using his phone, chewing gum, and at times appearing to doze off—all in full view of cameras. Such behavior led to widespread criticism, with many pointing out that other attendees managed to remain attentive and respectful.
Leaving Early
Following the service, Trump was quick to leave the event and return to the US. His prompt departure, combined with his earlier actions, fueled further negative reactions on social media, where many accused him of being disrespectful and making the occasion about himself.
Social media was flooded with comments criticizing Trump’s attire and behavior, with some calling it embarrassing and others noting that he failed to show the expected respect for the event and the late Pope.
