An “incredibly beautiful” family of four has tragically been found dead in what authorities believe to be a murder-suicide, shaking multiple communities across Nebraska.
On the morning of May 10, around 9:45am, the Nebraska State Patrol responded to a distress call at a residence near Johnson Lake in the Plum Creek Canyon area. Inside, they discovered the bodies of four individuals.
The deceased were identified as Jeremy Koch, 42, his wife Bailey Koch, 41, and their two sons — Hudson, 18, and Asher, 16.
What Authorities Have Revealed So Far
According to a statement from the Nebraska State Patrol, early investigation results suggest that Jeremy Koch allegedly killed his wife and two sons before taking his own life. All four individuals reportedly died from fatal stab wounds, with a knife recovered at the scene.
Who Were the Koch Family?
The Kochs were well-known in their community for their advocacy around mental health. Jeremy and Bailey — high school sweethearts married for over 25 years — had created a Facebook platform called Anchoring Hope for Mental Health. Their goal was to help others understand that they are not alone and to raise awareness about the ongoing mental health crisis.
Bailey Koch was recognized as a gifted writer, passionate advocate, and deeply compassionate individual. She frequently contributed personal stories to the blog Her View From Home, sharing raw and honest accounts of supporting her husband Jeremy, who had reportedly survived multiple suicide attempts in the past.
“Bailey had a way with words, using them to portray the harsh realities of mental health struggles,” the blog wrote. “To her, it wasn’t just about therapy or medication — it was about truthfully sharing your journey.”
The family was often described as close-knit and full of love. Bailey affectionately referred to Jeremy as her “hottie hubbie,” and their sons were known for being bright and full of potential. One of the boys was reportedly set to graduate from Cozad Community Schools this spring.
School and Community Reactions
Following the tragic news, Cozad Schools issued a public statement expressing sympathy and support for affected students and staff. They announced that Cozad Middle School would open its doors that afternoon to provide a space for grieving, and the high school graduation ceremony would proceed as scheduled, with counselors available to support students.
“We are grateful for the unity and compassion of our community as we face this tragedy together,” the statement read.
Other local districts, such as Holdrege Public Schools, also acknowledged the heartbreaking event. They opened facilities for students and staff to gather and grieve, offering mental health resources to help the community cope.
Current Status of the Investigation
Autopsies for all four family members have been ordered by the Dawson County Attorney. The investigation remains ongoing, led by the Nebraska State Patrol in collaboration with the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, Eustis Fire & Rescue, and other local agencies.
In their statement, the Nebraska State Patrol extended their condolences: “Our hearts go out to all the communities affected by this devastating incident.”
The Her View From Home team added: “Bailey never sugarcoated her story, because she believed people needed to hear the truth. And now, we will continue to share her message — because that’s what she would want. Mental illness does not win. Hope does.
