A mother is issuing a serious warning after her son narrowly survived an electric shock powerful enough to be fatal.
On April 30, 2024, Danielle Davis was startled awake by the screams of her 16-year-old son, Rayce Ogdahl.
“I heard him call out ‘mom’ and saw him standing in the hallway,” Danielle recalled.
She immediately ran to his room and was horrified to find burn marks around his neck.
“He told me, ‘I’ve been electrocuted,’” she said.
According to Danielle, Rayce had been lying in bed and shifted to get more comfortable when he heard something drop onto the floor. His phone was plugged in and charging nearby to ensure his alarm would go off for school the next morning.
When he moved, his metal necklace accidentally touched the exposed prongs of the phone charger, which was connected to an extension cord.
This accidental contact allowed electricity to arc through the necklace, severely burning his neck.
“Since everything involved was metal, it created a complete circuit around his neck,” Danielle explained.
Rayce remained conscious during the entire ordeal, fully aware that he was being electrocuted. His whole body began to ache as the current passed through him.
“He said it all happened within seconds, and he could see sparks coming from his neck,” Danielle recounted. “He felt pain all over and genuinely thought he was going to die.”
Danielle rushed her son to Integris Health Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit.
Doctors diagnosed him with second, third, and even fourth-degree burns. They stated that the electrical current was strong enough to have been lethal.
Rayce now bears lasting scars from his chin down to his collarbone, and the outline of the necklace is still visible on his skin.
Danielle says the terrifying experience has made her son much more cautious.
“We’re incredibly thankful he’s alive,” she said. “It’s a miracle he stayed conscious and was able to call for help. Things could’ve ended so differently.”
She is now urging others to be more careful: “No text or notification is worth keeping your phone on your bed. It’s just not safe. Rayce is living proof. Check your cords, and honestly, avoid using extension cords if you can.”
